My baby was admitted to hospital at 5 days having lost 11% of body weight. He would not latch on for breast feeding (many experts tried to help) so we were told to move onto the breast pump.
I wasn’t producing enough milk so we were advised to top up with SMA. He wouldn’t drink his bottle and anything he did take down he threw back up. The hospital could find no reason for this. Blood tests all clear etc. He was tube fed through his nose for 2 days. At 7 days he finally drank a 50ml bottle. He then continued this for each feed (although is quite sicky with it).
Doctors said he then needed 60ml every 3 hours. This was a struggle as he gets tired and falls asleep (stripping down etc doesn’t help-he dribbles out any more after he’s tired). He put on 0.3kg in hospital so was discharged.
Since being home for 2 days he has only put on 100g despite following the feeding plan (he sicks up abut 1 feed of 60ml a day). Midwife suggested upping feeds to 90ml every 4 hours instead, but baby still won’t drink more than about 60ml before either being sick or spitting it back out/ falling asleep.
Worried he will still be underweight at his next weigh in in 2 days and end up back in hospital.
Anyone have any advice on how I can get the extra food into my baby? I feel mean-poor little thing looks so repulsed when I try and upset when spits it out/throws up. I have even been recommended to use less breast milk and more SMA as it is higher calorie.
What concerns me is why he doesn’t seem to get very hungry (we wake him for lots of feeds), why he won’t eat more and why he is sick. Feel so helpless…trying all that’s recommended but little baby not having any of it!
All common things like reflux etc ruled out in hospital.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
(He was born at 39 weeks, forceps delivery-no problems during pregnancy)
