My daughter is 6 days old, and was not able to latch on properly no matter what we did, due to a lower jaw malformation. The lactation consultant in the hospital advised me not to try to breastfeed anymore because she was just chomping and beating up my nipples and could possibly tear the tissue if we continued. I got a breast pump from WIC through doctors orders and I’m trying my best to keep up with her, I’m pumping every single time she eats, but I’m still not producing enough milk, so I’m having to supplement her diet with formula. I’m giving her an additional half ounce of formula if she’s finished her milk bottle and still rooting around for more. I have not had my first postpartum WIC appointment yet.
Anyway, I was looking at the amount of food I would get as a full time feeder vs a part time feeder, the difference is outrageous. How would WIC know that I’m supplementing formula, do they require proof from a doctor or can I just say I am fully feeding? I am giving her as much breast milk as I can make, and I feel like we should still get the best package available because I am trying to eat as healthy as I can to produce the best milk I can. I don’t feel I should be “punished” or given less because I CAN’T fully feed, as opposed to not WANTING to fully feed.
How would WIC know, does my daughter’s doctor have to fill out anything in regards to her diet, and does WIC assess families on a case by case basis or is it a broad generalization as to who gets what no matter the circumstance?
